On the morning of February 16th, at about 9:45 a.m., Portland Police Bureau East Precinct officers arrived on scene of a single vehicle accident located in the city’s Montavilla neighborhood near NE Glisan Street and 87th Avenue. The crash involved a motorcycle driven by a 43-year-old man. The motorcyclist suffered severe, life-threatening injuries but was quickly rushed to a local Portland hospital.

Unfortunately, hours later, the 43-year-old biker would succumb to his injuries despite extensive life-saving efforts. The motorcyclist’s death was the second fatal motorcycle accident in Portland already this year. The wreck was also logged into the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s “Vision Zero” list of crash-related deaths as the city’s 12th traffic fatality of 2022.

The biker was riding downhill, headed west on NE Glisan Street when something triggered him to veer his bike away from traffic and into the parking lane, onto the curb. Although there were no eyewitnesses, neighbors in the area believe that the motorcyclist either swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the marked crosswalk or was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

The PPB’s Major Crash Team kept NE Glisan Street closed to traffic until about 3:00 p.m. that afternoon so they could investigate the incident further.

Have You Lost a Loved One in a Portland, Oregon, Motorcycle Accident?

Motorcycles lack the exterior shell and many of the safety features that occupants of passenger vehicles benefit from. Motorbikes are also significantly smaller than the average car, making them more prone to going unnoticed by other drivers. Because of this, motorcycle riders continue to be an unfortunately common segment of fatal traffic crash statistics. In fact, motorcyclists are about 29 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in crashes, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

If you have lost a loved one in a Portland motorcycle accident, you may be eligible for compensation. Oregon State Law permits family members of accident victims who lost their lives due to negligence the opportunity to recover their damages by filing a claim for wrongful death.

Although no amount of money can ever genuinely compensate for the loss of a loved one, a wrongful death claim may help provide a sense of closure for the surviving family. Monetary compensation can also help with any financial expenses you may have incurred due to the negligent party’s actions, such as funeral expenses or loss of income.
