Michael A. Hanson, a 25-year-old Portland male, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of criminally negligent homicide. At the time of the accident, Hanson was found to have been driving while under the influence of intoxicants.

Police Say Women Were Getting Help from Another Driver

The Oregonian/OregonLive reported that after the women’s vehicle broke down, another driver stopped to assist them. The two women were attempting to cross the interstate to speak with the driver when they were struck by the 2016 Ford Fusion being driven by Hanson. A third pedestrian at the scene was not harmed, according to police.

The names of the victims will not be released until family members have been properly notified.

Police closed the freeway down from approximately 2:20 a.m. Saturday until 9:45 a.m. the same day. The I-5 incident was the second motor vehicle accident to occur on this freeway in North Portland in less than 12 hours.

In the earlier collision, which happened on Friday at 5:45 p.m., a man died after crashing his motorcycle near the northbound Columbia Boulevard exit.

According to police, the death of these two women brings Portland’s total number of traffic-related deaths in 2020 to 42.
