PORTLAND, OR – A man was killed and his passenger was hospitalized after their vehicle careened into a pond east of Salem on Monday.

According to KPTV, the crash occurred when the driver of a 1999 Buick drove through the intersection of Joseph Street and 71st Avenue Southeast and crashed into Blossom Creek.

Bystanders were able to free a passenger in the Buick before it dipped below the water. Deputies administered CPR on the victim until they were able to be transported to the hospital.

The driver, 81-year-old Frank Kurbat, was unable to get out of his vehicle, and died at the scene.

Investigators believe low visibility due to fog in the area was a factor in the fatal crash.
