Pedestrians at risk in Mount Hood Forest
Thu February 16, 2012, 7:51 pm
Pedestrian safety is a serious concern in the roads leading to Mount Hood ski areas. Due to the lack of protected crossways, Mount Hood visitors cross mountain highways on foot between parking lots, ski areas, eateries, and recreation areas. Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) sets the speed limit on US 26 and OR 35 at 45 to 55 mph. So far ODOT has rejected Mt. Hood communities’ requests for crosswalks on US 26 due to high travel speeds. Government Camp is now proposing or additional pedestrian over or under crossings of US 26. Now the over crossing at Multopor is the sole only pedestrian crossing of US 26 within Government Camp.
